Welcome to the Department of Public Works' new website. We are dedicated to serving District Residents by providing clear and concise information on our sanitation services, collections and disposals, and seasonal services. Our goal is to help residents properly dispose of waste materials and keep public spaces clean.
Each year, we remove approximately 99,000 tons of trash and about 34,000 tons of recyclables from 105,000 single-family homes and small residential buildings (with no more than three living units). We prioritize environmentally-sensitive disposal methods for the District's solid waste materials.
As the enforcers of all sanitation regulations for the District, we work closely with residents and businesses through our Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Program (SWEEP). Our inspectors and investigators use education and enforcement to keep the District clean and promote responsible waste disposal practices.
